The present system of classical music stands on two pillars raga and tala. Both are essential for the two systems and form the rock bed of the system music. When it comes to the forms of Hindustani, the early forms were: Drupad is a serious and sober composition. lt starts with an alap followed by Jod and then the four composed sections - Sthayi, antara, sanchari and abhog,. The lyrics are generally in Braj Basha and involve veera and Srinagar rasas. Khayal literally stands for imagination, came into prominence due to the efforts of Sultan Hussain Shah Sharqi of Jaunpur. Unlike Drupad it is more delicate and romantic and has more freedom in structure and form. Thumri is a light form based on the romantic religious literature inspired by Bhakti movement. It employs folk scales and the text of the songs is of primary importance. Tappas are the ballad songs of the camel riders in the deserts. It is known for its quick turns of phrase. Under the influence of the Bhakti and sufi movements the devotional music developed in the forms of Keertanas, Bhajanas, Abhangs, the sabads of the Sikhs and Qawwali developed by Amir Khusrau.
