  • a) 2 Only
    b) 1 and 3 Only

    d) 1, 2 and 3 Only
    Solution:   c Explaination

The Sedition law was originally drafted by Thomas Macaulay but it was not a part of IPC in the 1860s and was even dropped from the law. It was introduced as Section 124-A in the IPC in the year 1870. According to the section 124-A of the Indian Penal Code ‗whoever attempts to excite feelings of disaffection to the Government established by law in British India‘ was to be punished with transportation for life or for any term or with imprisonment up to three years.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy died in 1833 while the Section 124A was inserted in the Indian Penal Code in 1870. Hence option 1 is not correct.
Gangadhar Tilak was known for criticizing the Government. He asserted that it was a basic function of the Press to bring to light the unjust state of affairs and to teach people how to defend their rights. And so, the Government decided to arrest him under Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code on the charge of sedition, that is, spreading disaffection and hatred against the Government. Hence option 2 is correct.
Mahatma Gandhiji was tried in 1922 for the same offense of sedition under the same Section 124A for his articles in Young India. Hence option 3 is correct.
